Girardi Takes Self Out Of Running For Nationals Job

(Sports Network) - Former Florida Marlins skipper Joe Girardi has reportedly taken himself out of the running for the Washington Nationals' open managerial position.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Girardi decided against pursuing the position for family reasons. Girardi's family had been in Miami for just 10 months after living in Chicago and he told the paper he doesn't want to move them again.

Girardi has a wife, two daughters, ages seven and seven weeks, and a five- year-old son.

The paper added that according to sources close to the situation, Girardi was the favorite to land the job, though nothing formal had been offered to the 42-year-old.

Washington is still looking to replace former manager Frank Robinson, who was not asked return as the club's manager in 2007.

Despite a low payroll and a roster of young and inexperienced talent, Girardi compiled a 78-84 record with the Marlins in 2006 and had them in the thick of the wild card hunt until early September.

Girardi signed a three-year deal with the Marlins a season ago, but repeatedly clashed with Florida owner Jeffrey Loria and his front office.

After deciding to retire as a player prior to the 2004 season, Girardi made his coaching debut in 2005 as the bench coach and catching instructor for the New York Yankees. He had no prior managerial experience at any level before being hired by the Marlins.

Girardi spent parts of 15 seasons as a player in the majors, accumulating a .267 batting average, 36 homers and 402 RBI. Girardi played for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals and Yankees. He was a member of three World Series championship squads in New York.

Girardi eventually retired after playing 16 games for the Cardinals in 2003.
